My Experience
Grant writing for individual artist project grants, and both project and operating grants for arts organizations. Selection of successful grants include:
Municipal arts funding (St. John’s)
Heritage funding (Cultural Economic Development Program - Gov NL)
Provincial arts funding (ArtsNL, CelebrateNL)
Federal arts funding (individual artist grants - Canada Council Explore & Create: research and creation; organizational funding: 4-year core operating funds)
The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) - Graduate Scholarship Master’s Award
Concordia Council on Student Life (CCSL)
Grant writing:
Individual artist grants
$40/hour
This is a sliding scale, and I offer discounts for students in the form of an additional round of edits, or a lower rate for an hour meeting. More information can be found below. This is based on the low end of artist preparation fees to be more accessible.
Presentations:
Arts organizations or institutions
$500
I always request the full CARFAC presentation rate when I do a talk on grant writing, artist statements, etc.
In 2024 this rate is $500 for a presentation less than 4 hours (often the presentations are 1 hour with time for questions, but always happy to go longer when the conversation needs it).
Consultations:
Arts organizations, institutions, and businesses
$362 for a half day
Based on the CARFAC Fee Schedule for consultations. If an organization would like to have me on retainer for a larger scale project or on an ongoing basis, we would negotiate an hourly rate that best fits their budget.
Additional Notes on my editing and writing process:
I spend some ‘pro-bono’ time initially learning about the artist, visiting their website, social media, and learning about their practice. Hourly rates will begin with an hour in-person or Zoom conversation to learn about their project ideas, while I take notes and ask key questions. I’ll then develop a draft based on the notes taken, an estimated 1-2 hours.
Alternatively, I also charge $40/hour for editing an existing draft the artist has written. This is my preferred way of working, since it better captures the artist’s original voice. I can typically do a round of heavy edits (including formatting, re-writes, and suggestions) in 1-2 hours. All of this is contingent on the artist and what they are comfortable with - if they can only pay for an hour, I will make sure it’s an hour well spent!
